American golfer Jordan Spieth had the opportunity to make history in the 2015 British Open but he fell short on the last hole. After winning the U.S. Open and The Masters Championship earlier this year, Spieth could have been just the second golfer in history to make it a three-peat all in the same year.

The tournament at the legendary St. Andrews golf course in Scotland was to be the setting of one of the great moments in golf history. Unfortunately, such was not the case as 23-year-old Spieth wasn't able to win his third major tournament in a row.

According to Bleacher Report, the only man to ever win the first three majors in a year was Ben Hogan and that was over half a century ago in 1953. Spieth fell only a stroke short of making history on Monday. The tournament ended a day late when delays caused by extreme wind conditions forced the tournament to extent to five days.

A double bogey that he made on the 8th hole comes to mind when looking for the pivotal moment that let the tournament slip away.Despite the double bogey, by the 16th hole he was still tied for the lead. The 17th ruined his chances after he failed to save par. On the 18th, with an opportunity for birdie, Spieth only managed to make par. He put himself out of contention for the playoffs that involved Zack Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.

Regardless of where it went wrong, The 144th Open Championship was not meant to be for Spieth and someone else came out on top. In the end, it was Zack Johnson who lifted the trophy after a four-hole playoff.

By the start of the final round, almost 30 players were still in contention for the win. It could have been anyone's game and the leader board was full of high profile names who were all within 5 shots of each other.

The likes of Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott and Justin Rose were still in the game. Old timers like Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen and Padraig Harrington were also within striking distance. They were up there elbowing for room alongside relative newcomers like Spieth and Jason Day.

Anything could have happened and it could have been Spieth's moment in history. Despite the loss, he still has a long career waiting for him and he looks poised to take on other records held by stellar golfers like Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.
