The American flag is flying high in Canada as World No. 1 Serena Williams disposed Samantha Stosur while Eugenie Bouchard exited early in the tournament after losing to Shelby Rogers in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.

The defending champion Williams dominated Stosur in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, as she delivered her signature serves with precision and pace.

Stosur only held serve twice in the second set, but the 17-time Grand Slam champion proved to be at the top of her game.

Williams, 32, will face Lucie Safarova, who earlier defeated Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-4, 6-2.

"She's extremely tricky," Williams said, mentioning Safarova. "It's definitely not an easy match for me."

In other matches, Bouchard, a Canadian, succumbed to what she called "pressure" of performing well in front of the home crowd, falling to qualifier Shelby Rogers in three sets, 0-6, 6-4, 0-6.

"It's just a match," the fifth-seeded Bouchard said. "It's normal to have a few ups and downs."

Rogers said she prepared for the match well, knowing that the crowd will be against her.

"I knew what I was getting into so I was prepared for it," Rogers said.

The 20-year-old Rogers will go up against 11th seed Caronline Wozniacki in the third round at Montreal.

French Open winner Maria Sharapova also needed three sets to beat Garbine Muguruza, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Recent Bank of the West Classics runner-up Angelique Kerber cruised through her matchup against Caroline Garcia in two sets 6-4 6-1.

Sharapova will meet Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in the next round, while Kerber will face either seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams or Yulia Putinseva, who had their match suspended with Venus ahead 6-3, 5-2.
