McDonald's wants to make fast food even faster.

The fast food chain is currently doing trial runs of a new drive-thru program, which aims to serve you your order in 60 seconds or less.

Eight hundred franchises in South Florida are participating in the test runs, which consist of a time-dependent guarantee wherein servers at the drive-thru window are required to give customers their order in one minute or less.

The test, which runs between 12 nn and 1 pm, will involve servers handing over a one-minute hourglass with a receipt to their patrons. Customers who do not receive their orders in 60 seconds or less get a coupon for a free sandwich on their next visit to McDonald's.

However, total waiting time might go beyond a minute because the countdown only begins after the meal has been paid for and the server has handed over the receipt.

QSR Magazine reported that last year, the average waiting time at McDonald's drive-thrus was three minutes. With the implementation of the new program, the fast food chain is attempting to stay competitive during lunch hours, especially with the proliferation of new fast food chains such as Chipotle.

Being told to pull up and park to wait for one's order has been a major cause of delay for McDonald's drive-thrus.

Malcolm Monreau Dunn, a McDonald's patron, once tweeted, "Correction* McDonald's drive thru is so slow, they have TWO "can you please pull up" spots."

McDonald's spokeswoman Lisa McComb stated that the promo is the chain's way of prioritizing the customer's lunchtime enjoyment, but has also said that they have no plans of going national with the 60-second guarantee.

The 60-second program will only take effect on weekdays in September - that is, unless McDonald's decides that it needs to make the speedy edge permanent in order to topple over its competitors.
