World No. 1 Novak Djokovic hacked out a close victory against Gael Monfils, while eighth-seed Andy Murray outclassed Aussie teen Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.

Monfils put up a fight against Djokovic, but he later showed mental toughness as he cruised onto a win at tiebreak 6-2, 6(4)-7(7), 7(7)-6(2) .

Djokovic took the early lead as he broke Monfils three times to take the first set. But Montfils responded in the second set, forcing Djokovic to a tiebreak and winning over the World No. 1.

Tennis fans were thrilled with both styles of play as Monfils hit a return between his legs and Djokovic playing for the crowd.

The third set saw another heart-pounding game for Djokovic. He roared back to life after trailing 3-1, completing the comeback at tiebreak. This time, the World No. 1 got the match on his bag, though he needed two hours and 40 minutes to dispatch Monfils.

Djokovic will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round, with the prospects for facing Murray in the quarterfinals.

In the other match, Murray had little trouble winning against Kyrgios, disposing the teen in straight sets 6-2 6-2.

"He outclassed me," Kyrgios said. "He played too good for me today."

Murray, the 2013 Wimbledon champion, was happy with the results after five weeks of not playing in any tournament.

"I thought I did most things like pretty solid," Murray said. "I didn't make too many errors."

Murray, 27, will now face 12th seed Richard Gasquet in the next round. Gasquet lost to Kyrgios in the second round of Wimbledon, before his major upset win in the quarterfinals against then No. 1 Rafael Nadal.

Nadal wasn't able to defend his crown in Canada due to a wrist injury he sustained while practicing at his home in the Mallorca Islands.

Nadal's latest test results suggest that the Spaniard is on the right track to recovery following a scan and clinical evaluation. He will still have tests from time to time however and maybe able to defend his U.S. Open crown at Flushing Meadows on Aug. 25.
