However, he couldn't quite catch up with eventual gold medallist and fellow American Jeffery Henderson
who has a smashing 8.54-meter initial jump, toping his previous personal best of 8.50.
Henderson finished with 28-0 ¼, Goodwin had 27 feet 1 ¾ inches and Emiliano Lasa of Uruguay took bronze with 26-9 ¾, said the New York Times.
The 24-year-old Goodwin said that while he didn't get a gold, he noted that winning a silver is pretty good considering it's just his second meet of the year, Yahoo Sports reported.
Goodwin said he was happy to finished second to fellow American Jeffery Henderson, since he was not just after individual awards but is also rooting for the US team to do well.
Nonetheless, while Goodwin he loves long jump, he made the assurance that his main focus is on the Buffalo Bills and football.
He said he will only spend time on this "other" sport if it will not create repercussions.
Goodwin decided to compete since the Pan Am Games will be held before training camp and in nearby Toronto, meaning he would not have partcipated had it conflicted with his NFL schedule.
The Lubbock, Texas native, who is about to enter his third season as a wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills, has 18 career catches, and three touchdowns.
Goodwin took a hiatus fron long jump after the Olympics to focus on football and was drafted by the Bills in the third round in 2013.
He recently he decided to do long jump again and finished fourth at the U.S. championships last month.
He missed the world championships in Beijing in August with the perforrmance, although it was good enough to get him to the Pan Am Games, and now he's leaving with a silver medal.
Goodwin was a two-time NCAA long jump champion at Texas, winning in 2010 and 2012. He finished 10th in the 2012 Olympics in London.
It is noteworthy that his qualifying jump of 8.33-metres at the U.S. Olympic trials would have been a garnered a gold in the 2012 Olympics.
In college, he was also a triple jumper runner and ran in both the 100-metres and 200-metres events.
