It was just another ordinary day, just another ordinary rush-hour scene, where thousands gather to catch a train.

But Wednesday saw the extraordinary happen at a train station in Australia when one commuter failed to mind the narrow gap between train and platform, and got his leg stuck.

Extraordinary presence of mind among the train staff, coupled with the extraordinary strength that ensued as people pushed the train carriage back, succeeded in getting the man unstuck.

The incident happened at Stirling Station in Perth a little past 7:00 AM, the train was city-bound, and the man was embarrassed but ok, it was learned later.

No one bothered to ask for the man's name; it just seemed enough to have helped. It was people-power at its best yet simplest manifestation.

Initial reports said the man was absently walking into the train when he accidentally slipped one leg into the gap between train and platform.

Fellow commuters reportedly tried to help him out for about 10 minutes but his stuck leg wouldn't budge.

It was then that Transperth staff got their wits together, with some notifying the train driver not to move while the rest called on the other commuters to get off the train.

The instantly-hatched plan was to try to push-tilt the train's body sideways, away from the platform, and just enough to free the man's leg.

Without second thoughts, every commuter pitched their bodies into the effort.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, some in their corporate attires, some slugging backpacks and purses, they pushed the train hard, repeatedly rocking the train till the man got unstuck.

A loud applause rang across the platform after the people-power plan succeeded.

An ambulance was on standby to attend to the man, but seeing that he did not sustain any serious injuries, they saw no need to bring him to hospital.

Commuter Nicolas Taylor, who took photos of the man while he was stuck, said he was walking fine and had boarded the next train to his destination.
