Another summer movie outing, another Game Over for Adam Sandler .
The sci-fi action comedy "Pixels" underperforms in the box office, pulling a mere $24 million and opening only second to Marvel's "Ant-Man." The Guardian reported that the overhyped Adam Sandler starrer allegedly annihilated a 24-hour viewing record, which they interpreted as a means of high anticipation for the movie. Unfortunately, after its weak performance during the opening weekend, "Pixels" might not stay on cinemas much longer.

On the other hand, Marvel's "Ant-Man" is enjoying its stay at the top for the second week in a row. Xpose reported that the superhero movie managed to rake in $24.7 million, bringing its total domestic profits at $106 million. Worldwide, the Paul Rudd-starrer has played very well to the tune of $223 million, already exceeding its $130 million production budget. Alongside Rudd in the movie are Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly.
The wild card of this weekend's movie outings that surprised the box office is Jake Gyllenhaal's boxing drama "Southpaw," which took the fifth place with $16.5 million on its opening week, just below "Minions" and "Trainwreck." The Ledger Independent reported that the drama managed to get into fifth place because it offered a different flavor among the typical animated, action-packed or comedic fare that is typical of summer movies.
"Pixels" was a surefire way to rake in money for Sony, since what can go wrong with retro gaming, Peter Dinklage and Dan Akroyd in one movie? It could have been the timing since sci-fi was fast maturing in the current state of the box office, especially after "Terminator Genisys" underperformed as well. Though Adam Sandler have bombed in his last few productions, there is always space to develop his comedy into what it was before, and fans should never lose hope on what Sandler could bring in to the big screen next.
