The city of Shanghai now houses the first full-service restaurant run by one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. This week, Gucci has officially entered the food scene still armed with the taste for all things ritzy and glitzy as its 1921 Gucci restaurant opens in China.
After two years of construction, the Gucci restaurant is now part of the roster of many chichi places in Shanghai. Located on the fourth level of the luxurious IAPM mall, the restaurant may be accessed through an elevator inside the Gucci store.

Diners are welcomed at a sleek reception area designed with gold-plated panels and gilded cocktail tables and chairs before getting seated. A bar with ornate display of liquors greets guests as they enter the restaurant. Inside, cozy couches and intimate table settings accented with a multitude of plush pillows invite any tired and hungry soul. Al fresco tables are also available just a glass wall away from the main dining area.
As though the interior is not an enough expression of elegance, every menu, silverware, and table cloth is adorned with "Gucci." For RMB 150 (approximately US $24), one can indulge on a two-course Italian lunch while RMB 300 (approximately US $48) allows one diner to splurge on a gourmet dinner. The menu includes soup, salad, pasta, meat, and seafood. However, an entire cake runs at a pricier tag with RMB 438 (approximately US $71) for a whole tiramisu and RMB 348 (approximately US $50) for a whole mango cheesecake.
The 1921 Gucci was inspired by the year when the brand was founded by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Italy. Although the restaurant in Shanghai is the first to serve a complete course, a cafe attached to the Gucci Musuem in Florence is actually the first food venture of the fashion house. The Gucci Caffe & Restaurant offers a seasonal menu that features locally sourced ingredients from Tuscany and neighboring towns. The coffee shop also includes a small bookshop.
