The battle against industrial waste is about to get serious as six provincial regions have vowed to carry out a resource recycling project that will target the waste surrounding Beijing.
The resource recycling project is very timely as the Chinese capital city is suffering from a great deal of trash and solid waste. Through this project, authorities and locals are hoping for a big improvement in areas where there are large volumes of industrial waste.

Authorities are even hoping that by 2017, the resource recycling project can eliminate up to 400 million tonnes of solid waste annually, as per China.org.cn.
Meanwhile, up to 20 million tonnes of industrial waste are expected to be recycled by planners each year upon the implementation of the project. The output value is also expected to be 220 billion yuan two years after.
The recycling project was spearheaded by Beijing and surrounding municipalities Tianjin, Shandong, Hebei, and Shanxi along with the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.
According to Eco-Business, the joint recycle project will foster economic growth as well as alleviate resource and environmental restrictions. It is also expected to promote regional coordinated development, deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Mao Weiming said.
Since Beijing is an economic hub, areas surrounding it regularly produce large amounts of solid waste that are primarily plastics, gravel, coal ash and slag.
Local media reported that the project is part of Beijing and Tianjin and Hebei's interprovincial program.
Authorities believe that implementing this resource recycling project can help provide a solution to the threats industrial wastes pose to Beijing and its surrounding areas. One of these threats is the growing problem in water quality in the aforesaid areas.
In 2014 alone, a massive 2.37 billion tonnes of industrial solid waste was documented in Beijing and its surrounding areas. The said amount took up approximately 70 percent of China's total bulk of solid waste, as per Global Post.
Nevertheless, MIIT official Bi Junsheng said that the joint project is not free from problems. He noted that several technological difficulties and the lack of integration are just among of the issues resource recycling faces.
