INCOMING! Giant Octopus Invades the Skies Over China

That's...really...big...

(Photo : Imaginechina/REX) As Orwellian as it looks, it's just a kite. Really. Trust us.

It may look like the result of a particularly bad acid trip, but no, that really is a giant flying octopus. Or rather, a giant flying octopus kite. Call off the heart attack.

Kite connoisseurs from around the world descended on the Inner Mongolia region of northern China this week for the annual China Hohhot First Grassland Kite Cultural Festival in Xilamuren.

But the airborne pandas, flowers, jellyfish, Hello Kitties, and even Little Nemo himself were outdown by the mammoth "Mollusk Octopus," a 360-foot long, 49-foot wide, and 440-pound cephalopod complete with eight tentacles and two googly red eyes.

And yes, it rates as the largest kite in the world to date per the Guinness Book of World Records. The crowds were suitably impressed.

The ambitious -- some would say nightmarish -- brainwave of the Heige Kite Team from the city of Tianjin took more than 30 people to get into the air, but once it was aloft, it dominated the skies over the rolling plain as well as the entries from the other 34 teams in the competition.

Built in 2013, "Mollusk Octopus" did not take flight until this year. Taking place 56 miles north of the city of Hohhot, it should come as little surprise that the popular two-day festival of flight is in one of the windiest places in China.

Gusts sweeping out of the Gobi Dessert have been known to carry dust as far as the Korean Peninsula and Japan, perfect for kites that just so happen to weigh more than any one of its handlers. Or possibly any two.

To all the also-rans currently stewing in a size-issue funk, take heart: The Washington State International Kite Festival, hailed as the  'Best Kite Festival in the World' by Kite Trade Association International is set to take place in the seaside town of Long Beach later this month on the 18th.

Perfect for a do-over, but boy, do you have your work cut out for you.
