Former six-division world champion and now boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya said that he approved the Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux fight with the intention of its winner facing the victor of the Miguel Cotto-Saúl Álvarez match, as per Boxing News 24.

De La Hoya told reporters that he envisioned of a "mini-middleweight tournament" between the four fighters. Some analysts and hardcore boxing fans have actually suggested that even a bout among the losers of both fights would still be interesting as all four boxers are known elite-level fighters in the 160-pound division.

The Golden Boy Promotions founder even said that if it was up to him, he would like to have all four in a "round robin" and have an "ultimate winner" at the end. However, De La Hoya has no influence over Cotto and Golovkin, who are handled by Roc Nation Sports and K2 Promotions respectively.

If Lemieux and Canelo won, then it would be easier to arrange a match for the two fighters as they are both under Golden Boy.

"This fight wasn't difficult to make at all," De La Hoya said, referring to the Golovkin-Lemieux showdown. "Lemieux wanted to fight Gennady Golovkin. He is the best in the middleweight division. He's an animal. He hits hard. He hits like a mule. It's literally going to be bombs away, so the fans are in for a treat."

Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs), who had just won the vacant IBF middleweight title, is also a known knockout artist just like the reigning WBA (Super), IBO, and interim WBC middleweight champion Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs).

Dela Hoya admitted that it would be a dangerous fight for both boxers and that either one of them could get knocked out right off the bell, as per Boxing Scene.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports' Andreas Hale indicated that along with Russian light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev, Golovkin is also considered by fight experts as the future of the boxing as the sport prepares for the retirement of superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

Hale noted that while the two looked like Ivan Drago of "Rocky IV" fame on the outside, both fighters have a bubbling personality that endear them to the fans.
