"Empire" star Terrence Howard has been sued by his ex-wife Michelle Ghent over assault and battery and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, according to various media outlets.

In Los Angeles Tuesday, just a day prior to the end of the statute of limitations, Ghent had Terrence Howard sued over an assault in 2013, reported Philly.com.

Court documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter indicated that Ghent had Terrence Howard sued over an incident in July 29, 2013 where Terrence Howard that took place at a rental house in Costa Rica. According to the papers, Howard "followed Plaintiff into the restroom of the rental house and punched her on the left side of her face. Defendant also grabbed Plaintiff by her neck and pushed her against the bathroom wall and strangled her for several seconds . . . He grabbed her neck again and pinned her against the shower glass and her head hit the wall."

Ghent alleges that she attempted to run out of the room, but Howard's son-in-law Billy tried to stop the fight by trying to "pry" the actor's hands from Ghent's neck.

"Defendant whispered to Plaintiff, 'Remember what I told you in Bora Bora? That is what I'm gonna do,' referring to a prior instance where Defendant told Plaintiff that her body would never leave the island. Plaintiff interpreted the reference to mean that Defendant was going to kill her," the documents added further.

Ghent then went on to tell the story of why she had Terrence Howard sued, saying that as the actor continued to attack her, she was able to pepper spray him in the face.

Apart from having Terrence Howard sued for the abuse during the incident, Ghent also accused her ex-husband of defamation, claiming that he has made "false accusations" of her saying death threats against him and his family via social media accounts.

Ghent did not specify the amount in damages.

Apparently, this is not the first time that Howard was accused of spousal abuse. In 2001, the 46-year-old had also been arrested after assaulting then-wife Lori McCommas. In Ghent's divorce papers in 2011, she also mentioned his repeated threats and abuse throughout their marriage, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Currently, Terrence Howard is married to third wife Mira Pak. They have one child together, a son named Qirin Love, according to The Inquisitr.
