The Swiss withdrew due to schedule issues and "wants to pace himself and not overload his calendar" before the US Open starts according to the spokesperson of the tournament.

"I am disappointed that I won't be playing in Montreal, because it's a tournament and a city that I really enjoy and has incredible fans," said Federer as reported by ESPN.

Tournament director Eugene Lapierre expressed his regret over Federer's decision to skip Canada's biggest tennis tournament and responded with a statement: "We are obviously disappointed to have Roger withdraw as it is always a privilege to watch him play. We also understand his decision because, above all, he has always been very loyal to our event and we would love to see him play tennis for many more years to come."

Federer has made his mark at the Rogers Cup twice by winning it in 2004 and 2006. He's also a 3-time finalist; he reached the finals last year but was stopped by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who took the title in straight sets.

With his legendary career nearing its twilight, Canadian fans could only hope for the former no. 1 to continue his ride on the tour even as he turns 34 on August 8. Despite no concrete announcements on Federer's retirement, there are floating speculations that he may do it anytime soon.

What with his recent statement about coming back to Canada, it could still be good news for those who want to get a glimpse of the champion before he finally bids farewell:

"My family and I have always received first-class treatment from tournament director Eugene Lapierre and his team," Federer said. "And I hope to be back in the future."

The men's Rogers Cup will take place from August 7-16 at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal. Novak Djokovic is the top seed followed by Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka. Canadian no. 1 Milos Raonic will also be participating in the event. The women's event, meanwhile, will be held in Toronto with world no. 1 Serena Williams headlining the draw.
