German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich suffered a heartbreaking loss against German Cup (DFB-Pokal) winners Wolfsburg in the German Super Cup on Saturday. The match ended with a 1-1 draw and Wolfsburg stunned the Bundesliga champions by edging ahead 5-4 on penalties.
The match took place at the Volkswagen arena on Saturday amid high hopes for Bayern Munich. The team was looking to regain the German Super Cup trophy that they last won in 2012. They lost both the 2013 and 2014 titles to Borussia Dortmund and with a new opponent this year, Bayern were optimistic.

Things were looking up for Bayern Munich when they scored what appeared to be the lone goal of the game. According to a match report by SkySports, Arjen Robben put them in the lead early in the second half. Unfortunately, they were unable to close out the match and Wolfsburg substitute Nicklas Bendtner managed to slot in an equalizer in the 89th minute.
With no extra time being played in the German Super Cup final, the match immediately went into a penalty shoot-out. Bayern's Manuel Neuer manned the post for the Bundesliga champions, while Koen Casteels was Wolfsburg's hero.
The Wolfsburg team managed to slot in all five of their penalty kicks past Neuer. The men who lined up to the spot were: Andy Schürrle, Kevin De Bruyne, Max Kruse, Niklas Bendtner and Ricardo Rodríguez.
Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso failed to chalk up his kick after Casteels managed to stop it with his leg. The single save was enough to render four other goals by Arjen Robben, Arturo Vidal, Douglas Costa and Phillip Lahm useless.
"We did everything we could to win the match," said Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola. The team's website published a slew of dejected reactions from the squad. "We played well but unfortunately dropped our guard in the last minute," said Neuer. The team's lone scorer Arjen Robben was also disappointed. "We should have wrapped it up earlier. We had chances and at 2-0 it would have been all over," he said.
Wolfsburg brought home their first silverware of the 2015/16 competitive season. Bayern Munich however, remain firm favorites to win the Bundesliga crown.
