Top seed Novak Djokovic bowed out of contention as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upset the Serb in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the Rogers Cup on Thursday.
The courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal proved to be tough for the seven-time Grand Slam champion as Tsonga scored off eight aces to send Djokovic packing early in the tournament.

"I wasn't hitting the ball clean and a lot of unforced errors," Djokovic said. "It's maybe a lack of matches on this surface."
The 13th seed Tsonga will face Andy Murray in the quarterfinals after Richard Gasquet withdrew from their match due to an abdominal strain.
Third-seed Stan Wawrinka was also eliminated by Kevin Anderson in a nail-biting match 7(10)-6(8), 7-5, while fourth-seed Tomas Berdych fell short of his quest against Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Anderson will face seventh-seed Grigor Dimitrov, who had a close-encounter with Tommy Robredo, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Lopez, on the other hand, will meet hometown favorite Milos Raonic, who had a tough match against Julien Benneteau 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Raonic, who came into the tournament as a sixth seed, recorded the fastest serve on the surface at 155.3 mph, using that advantage to thwart his opponent.
In other matches, David Ferrer got off to a slow start, dropping the first set to Ivan Dodig, but eventually finding his rhythm to advance to the quarterfinals 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The last top-seeded player standing in the tournament is Roger Federer who had a hard time in taking down Marin Cilic.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion got a scare from his opponent, extending the match to a third and deciding set after two consecutive sets that went into tiebreaks, 7(7)-6(5) 6(3)-7(7) 6-4.
The Swiss will have another tough day in the quarterfinal round as he goes up against fifth-seeded Ferrer.
