Former two-time world champion Amir Khan was reportedly disappointed by Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s decision to fight current WBA welterweight interim titlist Andre Berto for supposedly the last bout of his profitable 19-year career on September 12.

Khan had been chasing a big payday fight with the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world for several years now and his dream had always eluded him. Sensing that he no longer has any chance of being with Mayweather inside the squared circle, the 28-year-old Briton took his sentiments to the media.

"I'm disappointed not to have got the fight for what is the third time after having been one of the front-runners," Khan said, referring to the number of times he felt he deserved to fight the pay-per-view king, as reported by Boxing News 24.

Speculations abound that Mayweather was sick and tired of Khan's desperate yapping of a match with him that the unbeaten American simply did not want anything to do with him.

It was said that Khan's major mistake was not fighting quality opposition while waiting for a chance to touch gloves with Money. The former WBA, WBA (Super), and IBF Light Welterweight champion should have fought the likes of Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Marcos Maidana, and Timothy Bradley Jr. if he really wanted to be considered the top candidate to face Mayweather.

Instead, he fought middling boxers such as Chris Algieri, Devon Alexander, Luis Collazo, and Julio Diaz, all of whom did not provide significant threat, in the last two years, which is not enough to convince The Money Team to give him a shot.

BBC Sport reported that Khan said Mayweather was afraid of him, which is why the latter would not want a fight. But that was all that he could say as Floyd already made a decision.

However, Daily Mail Online indicated that while Khan was upset, he also acknowledged that the 38-year-old Mayweather had earned the right to choose whomever he wanted to fight.

"Floyd Mayweather has fought the biggest names throughout his career and has earned the right to face whoever he chooses," said Khan. "I wish my stablemate Andre Berto and trainer Virgil Hunter the very best of luck in the fight."
