Tuition fees in numerous school in China will increase this incoming academic year after more than 10 years of following the same rate.

Reports reveal that Jiangsu Province Education Department will increase tuition fees for several major courses, such as medicine, engineering, and liberal arts, will be raised by up to 17.2 percent. Hence, the fees will rise from 4,600 yuan to 5,500 yuan a year.

Sources also reveal that the Ningxia Hui autonomous region has recently proclaimed the same announcement to its students. Tuition fees for several major courses offered in this area will likewise increase. These majors include science, engineering, and agriculture courses. The raise to be implemented will possibly reach more than 50 percent while fees for other courses might be doubled.

Majority of academic institutions in provinces of Guizhou, Zhejiang, and Shadong have also announced an increase in their tuition fees.

However, officials from the Guangdong province claim that the tuition fee increase in their area will not be as hefty as those implemented by other provinces. Nonetheless, they confirmed they too will be raising their tuition fees.

In a statement from Wang Lupei, the financial bureau director of Jiangsu's education department, the tuition fees in their area have not been changed for 14 years.

"Those funds need to cover teachers' salaries, establish laboratories and purchase equipment. To make up the shortfall, the universities have repeatedly asked to raise tuition," he explained.

However, Ni Qiandao, the deputy director of the same department, clarified that scholarships will be granted to college and graduate students.

"Every postgraduate student will be given 6,000 yuan a year, and a doctorate candidate can get 12,000 yuan," said Ni.

"Students who do well in the university will receive up to 30,000 yuan a year," he shared.

Ni also disclosed that college students may avail of student loans, which amount to 8,000 yuan a year. In addition, graduate students may seek loans amounting to 12,000 yuan.

Apart from these financial aids, 4 million yuan will be allotted for students from poor families.

Moreover, students with disabilities will be admitted to the universities for free.

According to Ning Mei, a recently admitted graduate student at Guangdong University, her tuition fees reached more than 80,000 yuan. This amount covered three years of her higher education, which would have been granted for free just a year ago.

"Many students, especially those from poor families, will be under great financial pressure to gain places in universities," said Ning.

"Though some people in China are rich, we have to realize that many families from rural areas earn less than 10,000 yuan a year," the graduate student added.
