Chronic Stress Leads to Skin Damage from Steroids

Naturally secreted steroids caused by acute stress are needed to cure skin irritation.
Researchers said that shorter stress intervals can be beneficial for curing inflammatory disorders. They also found out that healing was caused by glucocorticoids, a class of steroid hormones, that is the response of the human adrenal glands to stress.

Peter Elias from the University of California explained that under chronic stress, the same naturally occurring steroids damage the protective functions of normal skin and inhibit wound healing.
With this new finding, researchers can explain the cause of the harmful component of the stress response.
Elias warned the public that long exposure to steroids can harm both the structure and function of the skin.
This study hoped to give an answer to the question as to why humans have the tendency to produce steroids when they are stressed.
Elias explained that their findings can give the public an effective anti-inflammatory system with just the correct amount of steroids that can promote healing over a short time interval that cause no harm.
He emphasized that this finding did not look at the implication of medical treatments. He believes that their findings have substantial benefits.
He theorized that the negative effects of steroids can be the result of over aggressive treatments where a person is subjected to high doses.
