The San Francisco 49ers let go of their 25-year-old outside linebacker Aldon Smith following his arrest for hit and run, driving under the influence, and vandalism charges on Thursday night by the Santa Clara police. Smith paid a bail worth $26,000 on Friday and was immediately released from jail.

However, his NFL team also released him and his contract that day.

The league's official website said that Smith's discharge was made by the Niners after "a long-running series of issues" and misdemeanors off the field for the four-year pro.

On the field, he was a force to reckon with, though. Smith was a Pro Bowl player in 2012 and was also a part of the First Team All-Pro on that same year. He was also 2012's NFC Defensive Player of the Year and the San Francisco 49ers MVP when he played a key role in capturing the NFC title during that time.

Head coach Jim Tomsula said that while Smith will no longer be a part of the Niners on the field, the team will not leave him alone during his time of distraught.

"Although he won't be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he won't walk this path alone," Tomsula said. He also added that anyone who was having alcohol problems should immediately seek help to not make things worse than they actually are.

Smith is now officially a free agent, but there are no potential takers as of the moment even with his known skill and talent defensively on the field, as per NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk.

This was not the first time the former Missouri standout was involved in breaking the NFL's substance abuse and personal conduct policies. Last year, he was suspended nine games for violating the before mentioned policies and it seems like he had not learned from any of them this year.

CBS Sports' John Breech recently reported that Niners' star quarterback Colin Kaepernick had an "on-field" argument with Smith during training camp, which may have contributed to the behavior of the Mississippi native and his eventual arrest on Thursday.

As expected, Kaepernick denied the reports and said that they were merely rumors that tend to link him with some of his teammates present off-field problems.
