For most students around the world, summer is a time of rest and relaxation before the onset of the next school year. But, children in Shanghai are enjoying their summer by attending school over the break.
Typically, students are allowed two months of vacation before beginning the next school year.

However, more parents are enrolling their children in summer school programs throughout Shanghai, in order to improve the student's academic performance for the following year.
Parents that are eager for their children to have high scores can enroll them in specially designed six-week courses that will still allow for family vacation time before school resumes again.
English classes are typically the most popular courses with the highest student enrollment.
Torie Bosnack, an American teacher with All Win Education mentioned the special skills that a teacher must have to teach children, especially during the summer.
"I usually try to come down to what level they are, and I try to first be as friendly as I can, so that they can really like me as a person. Once I can make them laugh, then they won't be afraid to speak to me. Once they know it's okay, it's okay if they make a mistake," she said.
More than 20 children attend the English classes on weekdays where they focus on activities such as English and table tennis.
These enrichment courses often come at a hefty price for some parents that spend upwards of 200 yuan (US$33) so that their child may participate.
It is estimated that some Chinese families will spend over 10,000 yuan (US$1,625) on education for their child during the summer.
