Typhoon Soudelor Leaves 17 Dead in China; Economic Losses Estimated at USD1.4 Billion

At least 17 people were killed and five others remain missing after super typhoon Soudelor unleashed its fury in Eastern China, data released by the country's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters showed.
The typhoon also displaced more than 3 million residents and destroyed 110,000 hectares of crops. The headquarters pegged the direct economic losses at Rmb8.73 billion (about US$1.4 billion).

Worst affected are the provinces of Fujian, which has not seen a violent typhoon in a decade, the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangxi in the eastern part of the country.
Local officials said Typhoon Soudelor, one of the most violent typhoons to hit Eastern China, destroyed houses and caused floods and landslides.
In Ningde City, Fujian, three people were killed in a landslide while the ravaging floodwater swept a village official, the province's flood control and drought relief office revealed. The village official was still missing as of this posting.
A total of 513,900 people in the province were also evacuated after the typhoon destroyed at least 3,000 houses and 57,000 hectares of crops. The provincial flood control and drought relief office estimated the direct economic losses to be more than Rmb4 billion (US$632 million).
In Zhejiang province, 12 people were killed in the city of Wenzhou while four others were still missing, authorities revealed. In the neighboring city of Lishui, another two people died.
The provincial civil affairs department of Anhui province also reported direct economic looses of Rmb560 million (US$88.5 million). About 550,000 people were displaced and 19,600 hectares of crops were damaged by the typhoon.
About 562 houses were also totally destroyed and 1,194 damaged in the said province, the department revealed.
The typhoon entered China through Fujian on Sunday, after leaving six people dead in Taiwan. It moved to Zhejiang and Jiangxi Provinces Sunday and brought heavy rains to Anhui, north Zhejiang, east Hubei, Shanghai and Jiangsu, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Typhoon Soudelor was the 13th typhoon to hit China this year.
