According to CNET, Windows 10 software updates are mandatory and the system will install them whenever possible and if the process fails, the system automatically reboots. Windows 10 attempts to perform this feat several times to ensure a successful installation. Luckily, not all users are suffering from this issue with only a certain percentage worldwide and unconfirmed if related to specific brand models of computers and laptops.

The possible root cause is the Microsoft's new policy of mandatory installation of software updates in Windows 10 that caused the rebooting bug. Unlike with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, users are given certain options on what to do with software updates such as selecting when to receive updates, which updates should be installed automatically and only to download but choose when to install updates. Some users attempted to reinstall the update manually but ended up suffering the same fate. Forbes claims that failure to install causes bad entry to the system registry and it can prevent any further attempts to reinstall it properly.

KB3081424 major glitch presents itself during installation after the system asks for a reboot. In this mode, the machine attempts to install the software update and the issue begins upon reaching specific percentage then reboots again. Normally, the machine reboots once or twice during an update but the glitch will become obvious once Windows notifies that something went wrong on the installation process leading to a rollback.

Some users at Microsoft forums managed to resolve the rebooting issue by performing a temporary solution. It involves the deletion of users SID which no longer exists in the system registry - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList. Checking which users no longer existing in the computer by going to computer management/local users and groups/users reveals the SID needs to be deleted. Users must be careful on deleting system registry entries and it is recommended to make a backup of the registry.
