Manchester United raised the curtain this season by winning against Tottenham Hotspur (1-0) on Saturday. The Red Devils are continuing to find their stability with manager Louis Van Gaal and they are looking to improve on their 4th place finish last season. The club will be aiming for their first English Premier League title in the post-Alex Ferguson era, and they will also be looking for automatic UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.
In the rest of the fixtures on Saturday, Aston Villa defeated Bournemouth (1-0), Crystal Palace defeated Norwich (3-1) and Leicester defeated Sunderland (4-2). Meanwhile, Everton could only manage a 2-2 draw against Watford. Defending champions Chelsea also just managed a 2-2 draw against Swansea in the final game of the day.
On Sunday, Arsenal were knocked back to reality after they were crushed 0-2 by West Ham. Liverpool defeated Stoke (1-0) while Newcastle and Southampton ended their first match tied 2-2. Manchester City closed out the first round on Monday night with a big win against West Bromwich Albion, with a score of 3-0.
Manchester City now sits on top of the League Table. They are followed by other first round winners like Leicester, Crystal Palace and West Ham United. Fifth spot is occupied by Aston Villa with Liverpool and Manchester United just behind.
Following their draw, Chelsea is sitting in the eighth spot, followed by Everton, Newcastle, Southampton, Swansea and Watford. The first round losers sit at the bottom of the table but they won't have to wait long to find redemption.
Round 2 of the competition begins on Friday, August 14. Aston Villa will be hosting Manchester United for the first match of round 2. Defending champions Chelsea continue through a difficult opening of the season as they immediately go up against last year's runners up Manchester City this Sunday.
