According to CNET, Google has announced its plans to let go of Niantic Labs - the division that was responsible for developing games. Google's decision to let it go indicates that the company is aggressively pursuing its mission of reorganizing their business and focusing on the profit making areas.
Nianitc Labs was responsible for Ingress, a fairly popular game on the Google platform. As confirmed on a report on Variety, Ingress is a multi player game which focuses on players going to various places and capturing them for their team. These places can be landmarks, signs, etc. basically, the popular places of the region that the player chooses to play in.
The reason to spin out Niantic is being cited as the company's need to foray into the domain of making games independently. Additionally, the announcement comes shortly after Google announced plans to reorganize its business and diversify between core projects and peripheral projects.
Just recently, Google also created a separate company called Alphabet, also with a similar purpose. The intention of this move is to give the peripheral projects a distinct platform to operate and support the business. Ingress has been downloaded close to 12 million times, drawing several users from all over the world.
Meanwhile, another related report on Variety also points out that the team behind Ingress has other projects to its credit as the team had also developed a sightseeing app, called Field Trip, which helps people on vacation to explore the various facets of the destination.
The report also quotes a Google spokesperson who confirmed the development saying that the move was done with a vision to help the company work more closely with investors and partners in the entertainment space.
