Venus Williams used powerful forehands and strategy to halt her losing streak against her sister Serena 6(2)-7(7), 6-2, 6-3, at the Rogers Cup on Saturday.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion was down 3-1 in the first set, but she rallied to quickly tie the match at three apiece and win the first set in a tiebreak.

Venus dominated the second set as she took advantage of Serena's unforced errors, which went onto the third set that gave the older sibling the opportunity to serve for the win.
The power-serving Serena converted 19 aces against Venus' six, but the World No. 1 committed nine double faults and a series of unforced errors that led to her loss.
"I definitely expected a tough match. She played well. She hit so many aces," Venus said.
Serena recently won the Bank of the West Classics in Stanford University but has not won any Grand Slam tournaments this year.
"I haven't even been able to get to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam this year," Serena said. "At this point, I'm really just looking forward to next year, to be honest."
With that being said, the two-time defending U.S. Open champion has already given up on the last Grand Slam event this year.
"I'm just saying I've had a really disappointing year ... especially in the Grand Slams. So I'm not going to put pressure on myself," Serena said.
Venus' win ends the five-game winning streak of Serena. Their last Grand Slam match against each other was at the finals of Wimbledon in 2009 where Serena emerged victorious.
The 32-year-old Serena is still ahead in their 26th encounter 14-11.
In the other semifinals match, Agnieszka Radwanska and Ekaterina Makarova gave it their all, but Radwanska prevailed over her opponent 7(7)-6(1) 7(7)-6(3).
The two ended up on a tie-breaking first set with Radwanska on top. The second set was the same as both ended up in another tie-breaking set with Radwanska capitalizing on an unforced error from Makarova to end the match.
Venus will now face Radwanska in the finals of the women's edition of the Rogers Cup on Sunday.
