There's a new addition to messaging apps for Google's Android Wear.

Facebook users can now send messages using their Android Wear smartwatches such as the LG G Watch, Motorola Moto 360 and Samsung Gear Live.

Anyone owning a smartwatch can now download the Facebook Messenger app from Google Play store. Facebook has already added support for the newest platform.

Facebook Messenger is also available for other mobile devices.

The Facebook Messenger app previously only displayed notifications, mirroring the smartphone's notifications. Now, however, users can view full message previews and interact with it directly on the smartwatch.

They can also use voice commands to respond to these notifications.

Users can send a "thumbs up" or "like" response to any message on the app from their smartwatch if a voice response is not possible.

Google currently dominates the wearables platform with their operating system. Analysts said the challenge for Google is to simplify smartphone features and edit them without diluting features and necessary apps that allow wearables to function similar to a smartphone.

The first Android Wear watches were released last June. Unfortunately, sales have yet to pick up as each smartwatch cost US$200.

Smartwatches relay reminders from a users' smartphone so users won't have to retrive their phone from pockets or bags. Android Wear's one advantage is it's really smart and intuitive personal assistant called Google Now.

This personal assistant can talk to search and send texts and emails, among many other functions.

Unfortunately, the design of smartwatches isn't quite appealing. The devices still look a bit clunky and consume a ton of battery life. They still need to be charged at the end of the day.

Moto 360, which is yet to launch, has a sleeker design than earlier counterparts such as the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live on sale now. Apple has yet to release its iWatch.
