The American Food and Drug Administration is slated to announce on Tuesday whether it will approve a female libido enhancing drug that it has rejected twice before. According to its creators, the controversial drug called flibanserin could help women regain sexual desire.

American Sexual Health Association spokesperson Fred Wyand said his group hopes that the FDA will approve the female libido enhancing drug this time around.
However, groups opposed to flibanserin have pointed out that the reasons why the drug was rejected twice by the FDA have not been resolved.
In June of this year, an advisory body to the FDA recommended the approval of the libido enhancing drug, but with conditions. The body does not think that the drug is highly effective as its promoters are portraying it to be. Although such recommendations are usually followed, the FDA has no legal obligation to follow it.
Sprout Pharmaceuticals is the creator of flibanserin and has embarked on a major advertising campaign to convince the FDA to give its approval to the drug. The company has enlisted the help of women's right and advocacy groups to help campaign for flibanserin. Even politicians, including almost a dozen Congress members have petitioned the FDA.
Critics of flibanserin are concerned over the negative effects that the drug could pose to those who will take it, according to Fierce Biotech.
Fuctional Sexology Institute founder Keesha Ewers said that flibanserin trials revealed that the drug did not produce the desired results.
Females, who were subjected to the trial, said that the drug only made minimal improvements in their sexual desire. Medical data has not shown how flibanserin can enhance the libido of female subjects.
Ewers said women should not equate the anti-impotency drug (for males) Viagra with flibanserin. Viagra creates erection in males by increasing the blood flow. Flibanserin on the other hand, works by altering the chemistry make up of a female's brain, which could lead to serious health problems.
