According to Mercury News, Google is working on a new development called Project Sunroof. This new project involves a set of tools which will allow home owners in Bay Area to calculate the various benefits of introducing solar roof panels.

Aparently, once it helps the users calculate the money that they can save, it will also direct them to the nearest dealers, selling the solar rooftop panels.Users can conveniently access this tool through www.google.com/sunroof. The entire process is very easy and barely takes a few minutes.

As far as the advantage for Google is concerned, the gain is clear. This can be looked upon as Google's social responsibility for the community by coaxing the American families to adopt to cleaner and greener energy practices. In the long run, the company also plans to capitalise on each referral that it gives to the solar panel providers. Therefore, through this new project, Google will earn the goodwill of people as well as the revenue for its business practices.

Another report on Business Insider confirms that the tool will use high resolution aerial mapping to calculate the amount of heat that hits the roof every year, and accordingly help the users make the right choice.

Details in the report reveal that the new project has been developed by Carl Elkin. In an interview, Elkin said that even though people wanted to shift to solar, the misconception that solar was expensive option was inhibiting them. Through his new tool, Elkin plans to address this issue and give users a better picture about the real scenario.

Elkin confirmed that he started working on the project as part of Google's policy that encourages every employee to allot at least 20 percent of working time to developing innovative ideas.
