Menahem Golan an Israeli Veteran Film Maker Dead at 85

Israeli director and producer Menahem Golan

A veteran Israel film maker who produced several blockbuster action movies passed away at the age of 85 at Jaffa in Friday night.

Menahem Golan, a legendary producer and director collapsed while he was out for a walk with his family. The family has not yet released an official statement on the cause of Golan's death.

Golan had produced more than 200 movies and had directed about 50 of those.

The Delta Force and the Death Wish were just among his unforgettable movies. He had also produced films starred by Sean Connery, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Sylvester Stallone.

He was once an Oscar nominee for his film Entebbe: Operation Thunderbolt. Golan also won 8 times in The Israel Prize in Cinema and the Violin David Awards.

The Cannon Group Production was established by Golan alongside with his cousin and partner Yoram Globus.

Cannon Group Production was once considered as the largest independent production company in Hollywood.

Among the Cannon's hits were The Death Series with Charles Norris, Missing in Action, The Delta Force, and Bloodsport.

Globus is the one in-charge for the finances of the company while Golan was for production and direction of films.

Golan and Globus also founded Noah Films, their first company and produced several Oscar-nominated films like Sallah Shabati, I Love You Rosa, Operation Thunderbolt, and The House on Chelouche Street.

Golan is of Israeli origin and was a pilot during Israel's War of Independence in 1948.

After the war, he studied at the Old Vic and returned to Israel and attached himself to direct theatre. He also studied filmmaking at the New York University.

Israelis will always love his homegrown classics, while he will be known for his low-budget, high-profit action and adventure films by international audience.
