'Mad Max' director George Miller has revealed the reason why he didn't choose Mel Gibson to play the hero in the movie franchise, stating that it wasn't about the actor's scandal, but merely because he was too old for the role.
George Miller who is producing the third installment in his Mad Max series, 'Mad Max: Fury Road', has shared that he had been 'heartbroken' about the scandals that Mel Gibson had been involved in over the recent years, but refuted speculations that he has chosen another actor to play the lead in his movie because of that.

Australian director George Miller has helped boost Mel Gibson's career around 30 years ago by featuring the actor in his Mad Max films alongside singer Tina Turner. The actor, currently 58 years old, is too old for the role.
The director has hoped to give Mel Gibson the role of the lone desert hero Max Rockatansky for the fourth film. While the director is developing the story over the past years, he has planned to make a second trilogy instead of just producing one new film.
Since he was worried that Mel Gibson might not be able to commit to three more movies, Miller has then decided to cast Tom Hardy as Mad Max.
Miller expressed his admiration of Mel Gibson as an actor and director, but has also stated that he must keep up with the new times. He has also hoped that the actor can star in more movies.
Regarding the new movie, the director has described it as an extended chase that took place for over three days. The screenplay is made up of storyboards instead of a conventional script where there is minimal dialogue and more action.
George Miller has released the chase footage of 'Mad Max: Fury Road' on the last Comic Con in San Diego, stating that it is the center of the movie's concentration.
The movie is due to hit theatres summer of 2015, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
