China's biggest internet search engine, Baidu, has been warned by Beijing to clean up improper content after pornographic files and material were found on its online storage service.

The warning was issued right after a series of investigations by Beijing's cultural administrative authorities. Public tip-offs confirmed the pornographic and obscene material found on some accounts in the Baidu Cloud.

The company was given a warning for its lax supervision and management of its online storage service and urged to promptly delete all files in question, shut down all accounts that contain those pornographic content and issue a clean-up report.

Baidu declined to comment about the issue.

The company has begun checking users' accounts, specifically shared files for pornographic content. A post on pan.baidu.com confirms this ban on pornographic material and said Baidu Cloud bans sharing pornographic content to cleanse the cyber environment.

China launched a high-profile web censorship campaign last April called "Cleaning the Web Campaign 2014" scheduled to end in November.

To date, this clean up has targeted websites, online advertisements, forum threads and even smart phone applications. It led to a shutdown of 1,222 websites and deleted 2,200 files containing text and articles about pornographic sources.

Last May, Sina Corporation was fined US$829,000 (RMB5.1 million) after authorities found indecent content on the online reading channel of its main website.
