Broadview Networks, an electronically integrated communications provider, said they ranked all 50 states in the U.S. and the District of Colombia based on the average broadband speeds.

Virginia has an average broadband speed of 13.7 megabits per second or about 1.7 megabytes per second, said Broadview Networks.

Behind Virginia are Delaware and Massachusetts with 13.1 Mbps. Rhode Island and the District of Colombia have average internet speeds of 12.9 Mbps and 12.8 Mbps, respectively.

The Silicon Valley location that is California had a speed of 10.9 Mbps while Alaska has the slowest internet speed with 7 Mbps.

Broadview Networks made a map that displays which states have the fastest Internet speed and which ones are really lagging behind.

The research started with the Akamai's State of the Internet Report released in June. Akamai is an Internet content delivery network.

Akamai's report said a state with an average speed higher than 10 Mbps is considered as having high-speed broadband.

Research shows that 26 states achieved this status. Below 4 Mbps is considered low-speed broadband and no state falls under this category.

Actual internet speeds vary widely depending on the service provider, type of connection (cable, DSL, and alike) and the place where one lives.

Akamai also checked the internet speeds of other countries.

South Korea has the fastest speed with whopping 23.6 Mbps. The second fastest internet with a speed of 14.6 Mbps goes to Japan.

The U.S. is No. 10 with an average speed of 10.5 Mbps.
