The 75-year-old Abercrombie is a Democrat who has been serving in the office for about 40 years while Ige, 57, was a state senator.

Abercrombie's political career has made him a legislator and has brought him to Congress and to the governor's residence.

"Every waking breath that I've taken, every thought that I've had before I slept, was for Hawaii," Abercrombie said, according to the New York Times.

Abercrombie promised to support Ige in the general elections, stating that he would do everything for Hawaii.

Ige, on the other hand, was surprised for his win. The state senator was little-known and had insufficient funds for the campaign.

While Abercrombie reportedly spent US$5 million for the elections, Ige shelled out less than US$500,000, according to Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission.

However, Ige banked on the unpopularity of the governor and while Ige was new, residents were willing to take a chance on him.

In an interview with the New York Times, Ige said people were telling him he was crazy for going against Abercrombie. According to him, no one believed he would get to where he is now.

The election happened while Hurricane Iselle was ravaging the state, but it did not stop the elections.

Two precincts were temporarily stopped in Big Islands due to the onslaught of the Hurricane. However, those who were unable to vote would have a special voting privileges in the coming weeks.
