Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costumes On Sale Spark Social Media Outcry from Trans Supporters

Caitlyn Jenner Attends Culture Club Performance At The Greek Theatre

Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costumes are now available at costume stores across the United States and Canada, but it may be the very first Halloween costume to get so much criticism on social media.

The transgender community did not take the costumes positively despite one of its packaging playfully saying, "You probably won't break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did... but you'll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together," Reuters reported.

Critics took to social media criticizing the retailers claiming it insults trans people and "promotes stereotypes." The costume includes similar items Jenner wore on her Vanity Fair cover where she also made her 'transgender' decision public-it has a brunette wig, a padded corset, and white shorts.

"Trans is not a costume. Even though Caitlyn is a public figure and I could understand someone wanting to celebrate her as a hero and as a public figure, this could definitely take on a transphobic vibe," Addison Rose Vincent told Reuters in an interview.

Vincent also started an online petition demanding that the costume company stop producing the items.

But some costume makers still think there is nothing wrong with it. In a report by USA Today, marketing director for Spirit Halloween, one of the companies in question, claim they have always made costumes as a way to celebrate heroes, superheroes, celebrities, and public figures.

"Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and our Caitlyn-inspired costume reflects just that," she told the news site. She also added that the costume will be available online by end of Sept.

But there is no stopping critics who think otherwise. Over social media, some comments were violent threatening to hurt whoever was seen wearing the costume.

"When transgender women step out into the world as their authentic selves, they aren't wearing a costume. Companies should think twice before seeking to profit from mocking trans women," a trans rights spokesperson told USA Today.
