Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett is a "little bit angry" about the decision of head coach Bill O'Brien to make Brian Hoyer the team's starter this coming season.

"Am I disappointed? Yeah. Angry? Little bit. Thought I did enough to deserve the job. But it was not seen that way so I'll do what's best for the team," Mallett said, as reported by Fox Sports. "I thought I had a pretty good camp. I thought I was consistent. I wanted this job more than anything."

O'Brien reasoned that Mallett was not as consistent as Hoyer during offseason training, which led to the former's decision.

The 45-year-old coach, who revealed his choice to a group of reporters on Monday, was said to have been expecting Mallett's reaction as he knew him as a serious competitor. The former New England Patriots offensive coordinator also reportedly believes that the current set up would just make the four-year pro strive more to improve his game at the very least.

"That's what you want. You don't want a guy jumping around doing back springs when he gets named the backup," O'Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle.

The 27-year-old former Arkansas standout started two games for O'Brien last year as their quarterback options, who was then led by now Jets signal caller Ryan Fitzpatrick, had been riddled by injuries all season.

Mallett played three years for the Patriots as main backup for Tom Brady from 2011 to 2014 before he was traded to the Texans in August 2014 for a future draft pick. He would have started more at QB if not for a season-ending pectoral injury he suffered just two months into the season.

By June this summer, Mallett was back in training with his teammates and had been in a close battle with Hoyer for the starting spot ever since.

The NFL's official website indicated that the Batesville native was "unimpressive in his two preseason opportunities" thus far, and so O'Brien and the rest of the Texan coaches decided otherwise.

"He disagrees (with the decision), but he's going to go to work and prepare like he's going to play, and that's what he's done," O'Brien said.

However, the coach also admitted that both players will get a crack at the starting job this coming season, only that Hoyer will be the first in line.
