Cyborg Technology can Treat Brain Diseases, Scientists Find

Scientists are combining cyborg technology with brain signals to further understand how the brain works, which can lead the way to treating serious brain diseases.
Charles M. Lieber, one of the researchers, said that by focusing on nanoelectronic connection between cells.
They can create biological materials that can be integrated with cells and cellular networks on tissues, he said.

Lieber believes that putting this sci-fi fantasy to life can threat serious neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease happens when nerve cells malfunctions which make patients have difficulty doing mundane activities like walking, talking, eating and swallowing.
He said that even though scientists are working furiously to know the causes of neurological disorders, it is still hard for them because it involves the brain which needs detailed scrutiny.
He also said that scientists are unable to see what's happening in the body's command center which hinders development of effective treatments.
Lieber said that nanoelectronics opens opportunities for scientists to find out what's wrong in the brain and find solution to make it functional again.
The cyborg technology is composed of ultrathin nanowires that can monitor and influence cells, researchers said.
The technology also has ultraflexible, 3-D mesh scaffolding with hundreds of electronic units that can grow in living tissues, they added.
Researchers said that a tiny electronic probe can record signals between cells and can signal body movements like breathing and swallowing, which are affected by neurodegenerative diseases.
To date, they are still figuring out how to inject the cyborg technology into the brain fully to integrate its to biological web of neurons.
Lieber said that it is hard to say where the work will take them but he believes that their approach will take them to a revolutionary find that can save thousands of lives.
