Japan's ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said that the recorded number of elementary and high school students for 2014 is the lowest it has ever been.

The recorded number of students for this year declined since 2013 and is expected to remain on a downward trend for the next five years or even beyond, the ministry said, according to TV Asahi.

In a study spear-headed by the ministry regarding the reason for the sudden decline, they were able to learn that 6.6 million students go to elementary, and only 3.5 million students attend junior high school.

The resulting figures were 100,000 less than the recorded numbers in 2013.

In a report released by the ministry, they said the reason for the decline in the number of students is because of the declining number of birth rates in their country, which is expected to continue for the next five years.

Included in the ministry's report are findings that nearly 120,000 elementary and junior high school students had a perfect attendance for more than 30 days straight, and those who had absences had health and financial concerns.

The ministry announced that the excellent attendance of the students has not happened since 2008.

Meanwhile, the number of Japanese people who are over 65 has reached its record high as the number of children reached an all time low, the Guardian reported.

The number of children under 15 decreased by 160,000 from 2013 to 16.33 million, according to the ministry of internal affairs and communications.

The recorded decline is lowest it has ever been since 1950 which marks the 33rd annual decline in children's population.
