A fresh "Star Wars Rebels" short film is set to give fans a taste of what's to come in the new animated show.

On Monday, collaborators Lucasfilm and Disney XD released "The Machine in the Ghost," the first of the four shorts from the upcoming "Star Wars Rebels" series.

The three-minute story, which is already up on the official Star Wars YouTube account, features the characters of Hera, Kanan and Chopper who try to navigate their ship called "The Ghost." Fans can also see a Star Wars-style dogfight as well as get to know more about Chopper, the droid that helps in maintaining the Ghost.

"Star Wars Rebels" is set between "Star Wars Episode III" and "Star Wars Episode IV." The production team, led by executive producers Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past), is promising to continue the legendary tradition of aesthetics and swashbuckling adventures from the original Star Wars saga.

The new series opens during a dark time in the galaxy, when the Galactic Empire has just tightened its hold on the different worlds. The Imperial forces are ruling a remote planet with an iron fist, but there are still those who are brave enough to rise against the Empire. Hera, Kanan and Chopper are members of the Ghost's motley crew, who will embark on different adventures to face new villains and become heroes who will fight against the Galactic Empire.

Kanan, voiced by actor Freddie Prinze Jr., is a Jedi who has been in hiding since Order 66. He is joined by Hera, voiced by actress Vanessa Marshall, who is the captain and the pilot of the Ghost. Rounding up the ragtag team is the ship's droid, Chopper, who is in charge of maintaining the ship and playing the mediator between Kanan and Hera who don't seem to see eye-to-eye on many things.

"Star Wars Rebels" will make its debut with a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel in October.
