If one intends to visit china they should keep the following on their list of places to go. Besides the Great Wall of China, this country has a lot to offer. It is home to some of the most beautiful temples, skylines, and historic places owing to its rich culture and civilization (one of the oldest). The Great Wall is surrounded by breathtaking scenery as it passes through steep mountains. It is around 5,000 km long and joins the western frontier to the eastern coast.

First up is the Pudong Skyline. It is situated in the Chinese capital, Shanghai at the eastern side of the Huangpu River . This has emerged as a large financial and commercial hub. The skyline includes skyscrapers like Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Jin Mao Building, and the Shanghai Tower.  It is surprising how much the area has developed as it was merely a farmland 20 years ago.

If you are looking for some history the Magao Caves are one of the places you need to visit. They are en route to the Silk Road, southeast of the center of Dunhuang. The caves consist of art work exhibiting Buddhist culture dating back to a 1000 year. This art form came into existence in 366 AD. Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes are the other two ancient rock temples that can be visited.

One of the greatest archeological wonders of China is the Terracotta Army in Xian. These are life size sculptures of an army during war periods 475-221 BC. They were a deciding factor in the formation of a united China. It was discovered by farmers in 1974 while digging and by 1987 it became the world cultural heritage.

While in China you cannot miss the Forbidden City, where ordinary civilians were not allowed to enter. The palace has over 8000 rooms with gold walls painted with red and yellow. 24 emperors ruled the country and enjoyed exclusive rights to the city.

Got time for some more? You can also visit the Potala Palace in Lhasa valley of Tibet, the Bund in Shanghai that portrays European architecture, the yellow mountains near Hangzhou and the Li River in Guilin when in mood for some landscape.
