Intel's Begins Shipping Powerful 14 nm Chips for Ultra Thin Computers

Intel

Intel has started shipping chips using its Broadwell-Y architecture for use in low-voltage Core-M processors.

It said electronic devices with the new technology will make it to the market this holiday season.

Intel's Core-M chip will be used in thin computers as slim as nine millimeters and don't rely of fans for cooling, said Rani Borkar, vice president and general manager of product development.

With the Broadwell architecture, Intel doubles CPU core performance; increases graphics performance by seven times and reduces power by four times.

Since 2010, systems based on Intel's chips have delivered double the battery life while cutting the battery size in half

Core-M is expected to outperform other chips used in tablets and smartphones from Qualcomm, which uses ARM technology.

Borkar said their Broadwell design features computer-grade chips that can be used in tablet-like devices.

Broadwell Y chips use 14 nanometer processing techniques and half the power of previous designs. It also takes up less space on devices.

It uses thermal reduction that enables nine-nanometer-and-smaller fabless designs. It also has a dynamic and optimized system and thermal management.

Broadwell Y chips represent next-generation graphics, media and display features.

It also adds a lower-power chipset, voice features for communication and faster file storage.

The new Intel chip can be useful for creating a thinner and lighter laptops and tablets while having enough power to handle these devices.

Intel is now shipping these 14 nanometer Broadwell chips in volume to customers.

Expect to see thinner and lighter laptops and tablets this coming holiday season.
