The Los Angeles Clippers have signed 10-year NBA veteran center-power forward  Chuck Hayes to a non-guaranteed deal.

Hayes' negotiatons with the Houston Rockets fell apart due to limited roster flexibility and financial considerations before he pursued a deal with the Clippers, who already have 14 guaranteed contracts, according to NBC Sports.

The Clippers could rely on the 6-foot-6 inch Hayes to provide leadership, good defense in the post, strength on the glass, make solid screens, and a lot of hustle.

However, while Hayes is pretty much undersized for his position, it doesn't seem to be much of a liability for him while guarding the post.

In fact, that perhaps is something the Clippers saw in him--one who could be useful in match ups with Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies, LaMarcus Aldridge, David West and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, and Dwight Howard of the Houston Rockets.

Hayes will compete for minutes of  the bench with Josh Smith and Cole Aldrich.

He was the team's choice over the likes of Glen Davis, ex-Clippers center Ryan Hollins and former first-round pick of the Washington Wizards Chris Singleton.

The 32-year-old  Hayes averaged 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 29 games for the Toronto  Raptors last season.

He posted  3.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 18.4 minutes in 642 career regular season games, with 244 as starter, for the  Rockets, Sacramento Kings and the Raptors, according to the NBA.com.

Hayes  found no takers during the 2005 NBA Draft and was selected sixth overall by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in the 2005 NBA D-League Draft.

He played in 15 games for the Thunderbirds before being signed by the Rockets as a free agent in January, 2006.
