Google is teaming up with five other companies to lay a submarine cable system under the Pacific Ocean that will provide faster Internet speeds.

The US$300 million cable system called "Faster" aims connect the United States to Japan using the latest 6-fiber-pair cable and optical transmission technologies.

The initial design capacity for Faster is 60 terabytes per second (TBps) or 100GBps x 100 wavelengths x 6 fiber-pairs.

The system is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2016.

The submarine cable will be landed initially in the areas of Chikura and Shima in Japan. Its connection in the United States will extend to major West Coast areas.

This will include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. From Japan, the system will extend its capacity to other Asian countries.

The project will be the first of the many underwater telecommunications cables that will connect many areas all over the world.

This will, in turn, "help run global Internet and communications," said Woohyong Choi, executive committee chairman of the consortium that handles the project.

Google decided to invest in the submarine cable project to ensure that there will be a great network infrastructure to handle its products, as well as provide faster and reliable Internet service.

To date, Google already has fiber service, which offers high-speed Internet access with speeds up to 1 GBps in several US cities, including Austin in Texas and Kansas City.

The search engine company, however, plans to surpass its current service speed once the Faster cable system is completed.

The project will be jointly managed by China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI, and SingTel. Japan's NEC will act as the system supplier.
