"Law and Order Special Victims Unit" Season 17 is set to premiere in a month and the trailer of the two-part premiere has been released.
"Law and Order SVU" is turning 17 next month and the premiere episode promises to be very big for the show. For the pilot, the show is going to bring back an old nemesis that seems to have gotten better at his dark craft as seen in the preview clips. The killer doctor who gave viewers nightmares in the crossover episode of "Chicago P.D." and "Law and Order SVU" Greg Yates will return. And according to Enstars, there will be an added twist with Yates' return to the show. There have been indications that scenes from the premiere episode will have elements inspired by the crime story of Robert Durst.

In a report of Vulture, the pilot clip preview showed the SVU investigating nine bodies recovered with links to each other which is a take from the Durst saga. The killer is rich and a high profile member of the society like Durst which makes it hard to suspect him. And the method for the disposal of bodies is similar - in trash bags. Even the way Yates is caught via an accidental confession caught on tape mimics the Durst case.
In the same post by Vulture, it was noted that this is not the first time the show borrowed ideas from a real crime story. In 2002, David Thornton played a wealthy cross-dresser who murders a close friend. And in 2004, Henry Stram played an eccentric millionaire cross-dresser who kills his neighbor and it was revealed including his own wife decades earlier.
The series is famous to source its adaptation for hot topics and news such as Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner has caught the attention of the writers.
