Arguably the two most influential families in Democratic Party circles and American politics today, the rival Obama and Clinton families are scheduled to attend the same party Wednesday at Martha's Vineyard.

President Obama and his family are vacationing at the Vineyard. The Clintons are at the Hamptons. While not the best of buddies, the fabulous foursome -- Barack, Michelle, Bill and Hillary -- are due to be at Farm Neck Golf Club on the Vineyard for an 80th birthday bash for Ann Jordan. She is the wife of longtime Clinton friend Vernon Jordan who is throwing the party.

The Obamas have been taking annual summer vacations since the president took office. They're renting a Vineyard home for several weeks. The Clintons have been on a highly publicized seaside visit to the Hamptons, staying at a private home.

Hillary Clinton already was scheduled to sign her new book at a Vineyard Haven bookstore, Bunch of Grapes, on Wednesday. Hence, the arrival of the Clintons to the area the day of the soiree.

White House officials confirmed Tuesday that the Obamas would be at the Jordans' home for the party. They were "very much looking forward" to mingling with the Clintons, the official said.

Political wags already are hard at work speculating about what type of conversation might be expected. Hillary Clinton made a series of remarks in recent, highly publicized interviews last week critical of Obama's foreign policy measures in Syria and Iraq.

While the Jordans event interrupts both families' ongoing summer vacations, the summer hasn't been all that relaxing for them to date anyway. The Clintons have been staying at Amagansett, N.Y., in the tony Hamptons.

However, the weeklong vacation has been interrupted by fundraisers and public appearances by both Hillary and Bill. Hillary Clinton has been on a national publicity campaign for her book "Hard Choices" including more than 75 appearances over 60 days in 15 states. Bill Clinton has been traveling to Australia, Southeast Asia and Europe promoting the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.

Meanwhile, world affairs have intruded on the Obama vacation. The president already has held news conferences addressing fast-moving events in the Middle East and has been consulting with aides and officials. He plans to interrupt vacation plans entirely on Sunday for a series of Washington meetings before returning to the Vineyard on Tuesday for the remainder of the vacation due to end on Aug. 24.
