As tributes for American actor and comic Robin Williams continue to flow from around the world, the Marin County Sheriff's office announced the details of how we was found dead in his bedroom - lifeless, and with a belt around his neck, and a knife beside his body.

Investigators have concluded that Williams hanged himself from his bedroom door using the belt sometime between late Sunday, until he was found by his personal assistant before noon Monday. 

Lt. Keith Boyd, Marin County Assistant Deputy Chief Coroner , also revealed  that Williams' left wrist had cuts, and that a pocket knife was found near his body. The knife had "red material on the blade which appears consistent with blood." Boyd said tests will be done on the material to determine if it was actually blood. 

Boyd also said the autopsy on Williams' body did not find any indication of a struggle or physical altercation, consistent with the finding that his death was a suicide.

The official said Marin County communications received  a 911 call at about 11:55 a.m. on Monday from a "distraught caller" who indicated there was an apparent suicide due to a hanging. Firefighters who responded and proceeded to Williams' Tiburon residence pronounced him dead at 12:02 p.m.

Asked if Williams left a letter, Boyd would not confirm nor deny this information, and said that investigators would discuss "the note or a note" later.

The coroner's investigation also revealed Williams had been seeking treatment for depression, Boyd told reporters. Williams' media representative Mara Buxbaum had said Monday that the actor has been battling severe depression of late, and that his death was a tragic and sudden loss.

Several times in the past, Williams had acknowledged he was having a drinking problem and that he has used drugs. He had also gone at least twice into rehabilitation and had a heart surgery in 2006.

Lt. Boyd said Williams' wife Susan Schneider saw him alive last at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday before she went to bed. Schneider left the house at about 10:30 a.m. Monday believing the actor to be asleep.

Williams' personal assistant opened his bedroom at about 11:45 a.m. when no one answered several knocks on his door, and found the actor dead.
