(Photo : REUTERS/Mark Blinch) U.S. researchers say teenagers are increasingly using e-cigarettes to smoke marijuana.
A pediatric study published on Monday has revealed that an increasing number of teenagers in the United States are using e-cigarettes to conceal their usage of marijuana. The device is used to vaporize pot; ensuring it is not easily detected by the police.
The recent survey has uncovered that almost 30 percent of the country's high school pupils have tried inhaling marijuana through an e-cigarette device. The profile of the student user is usually male.

One of the lead writers of the survey, Meghan Rabbitt Morean, explained that e-cigarettes are normally used to inhale nicotine. However, teens have found an innovative use for the device.
She adds that smoking marijuana the normal way could easily be detected because of its smell. However, inhaling marijuana using e-cigarettes is a clever way to fool the authorities.
Morean qualified their findings by saying that the survey is yet to be corroborated by other similar studies. More research is needed to find out the long term effects of using e-cigarettes to inhale marijuana.
U.S. health authorities have warned that people who use marijuana can developed various health conditions such as lung problems, low sperm production or inability to remember things.
A survey conducted by the Nicotine and Tobacco Research Journal claims that number of teenagers using e-cigarettes has doubled within a two year period starting in 2011. NWR reported that it was also during that year that more teenagers used marijuana in contrast to those who smoked cigarettes.
Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association president Phil Daman said that the study does not necessarily paint a true picture since only a small population of teenagers in the state of Connecticut were involved in the survey.
Daman insists that e-cigarettes provide smokers, who want to quit, a safer and healthier way to get their nicotine fix without lighting an actual cigarette. Nevertheless, he said that his association do not condone the use of e-cigarettes by minors.
He adds that parents and legal guardians should advise their wards not to experiment with the device.
Morean, meanwhile, said that her group will have to conduct further research on the matter since the particular study is quite new.
