Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck underwent left knee surgery after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work and will be out for "a period of months."

The  24-year-old Welbeck suffered the injury in April and had been working towards a comeback.

Welbeck wanted to avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as respond well enough, reports ESPNFC.

Arsenal was not able to sign a striker before the trade window closed and was only able to bring in goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been criticized Arsenal supporters for not getting a single outfield player and later revealing that Welbeck will be out for several months rather than being out for a couple of weeks.

Wenger is just ignoring the criticism.

Had the Arsenal boss revealed the nature of Welbeck's injury while looking to sign a striker, any transcation would have been at double the usual price, according to a Daily Mail report.

In fact, Wenger tried very hard to bring in striker Karim Benzema and offered up to £50million but were  rebuffed.

The 27-year-old Benzema would have almost no "resale" value if he flopped over the few years, so offering more would have been ridiculous.

Fans also wanted Arsenal to sign Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, but Arsenal  chose not to make a late bid for him since paying £50m-plus would have too much for his abilities.

Cavani scored 19 times in 35 games last season in in Ligue 1 - where the competition is significantly much easier  than the Premier League.

That's a strike rate of 0.54 goals/game - nearly identical to the 0.52 scored by Arsenal center Olivier Giroud in a tougher league ,which all came from open play.

Considering that Cavani netted two penalties in his 19 goals, Giroud actually has a more impressive record.
