Chinese Lesbian Student Sues Ministry of Education, But Parents Cannot Accept Her Sexuality

A college student has sued China's Ministry of Education over demonizing contents in textbooks regarding homosexuality, according to The Paper. This issue has sparked several discussions on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media site.

Qiu Bai (pseudonym), 21, is a third year of student at Sun Yat-sen University in Southern China. Two years ago, she felt uncertain about her own sexuality when had a crush on a female classmate.  In order to figure out why, she borrowed some textbooks regarding homosexuality from the university's library.

Qiu was shocked that at least five textbooks, published after 2001, classified homosexuality as a psychological disorder and need to be "healed."

Fighting for more gay rights, she mailed a letter to Ministry of Education regarding textbook errors in May, but receive no response as legally required for 15 days. Therefore, she filed a lawsuit against Ministry of Education. This is the first case for the right of homosexual education in China.

Qiu has been under pressure from the school and her parents after this incident. A college staff was afraid that her action would damage school's image and warned her to stop. Without permission, this staff contacted her parents and showed the news regarding Qiu Bai on Weibo, forcing her out of the closet.

Her parents were so disappointed and cannot accept her sexuality.

"They hope I can change. I was taken to hospital this week for lots of examination. My parents trust the college staff. They think homosexuality was abnormal and deviant. " Qiu Bai told The Paper.

Qiu Bai does not come from a wealth family. Her parents made all efforts to cultivate her and were so pound that their daughter can study at one of the most well-known universities in China. This incident has undoubtedly shaken this traditional family.

Recently, Qiu wrote an article titled "Those Love and Freedom" on WeChat Public account and got a large number of shares.

"This is more like a letter to my parents. I hope they can understand my action and what I truly think in my inner world."  Qiu Bai told The Paper.
