A Chinese college student attempted to call on her WeChat friends to save her as she was about to be raped, but they took the message as a joke and simply cliked the "like" button.

Hangzhou Economy and Technology Development District court received a case recently about the acquaintance of a female college student, who was a rape victim.

Xiaolu (anonymous), 20-year-old, is a freshman of a college at Xiasha, Hangzhou city. Xiaolui, who is described as slim and beautiful, often hangs out with friends after class.

One night in April, Lu had a party with some friends including Hu at a local KTV until 3:00 AM. Afterward they had a late meal at KFC.

Hu, 30-year-old, is a friend of Xiaolu's ex-boyfriend. The two had reportedly met several times before in bar before that night.

At the end of the party, Hu invited the college student to have a private conversation and drove her to a hotel.

In the hotel room, Hu wanted to have sex with her. But Xiaolu refused and updated her online status on WeChat's friend circle saying: "Can anyone help me? I am in a dangerous situation." She attached the location of the motel to her message.

Unfortunately, most of her friends thought she was just kidding. They clicked "Likes" on that status and even replied jokingly: "Policemen might be more helpful."

Actually, Xiaolu got a chance to leave the room, but she came back twice for her handbag and cellphone that she had left behind. The last time Xiaolu came back, she was forced to have sex with Hu.

The rape victim called the police next day, and Hu was arrested soon afterwards. Hu claims he is innocent and the sexual encounter between them was consensual. 

"The girl came back to the hotel room twice. I thought she was just to shy to do this. She was actually willing to have sex with me," he said.

Hu was brought to court and charged with rape. The court sentenced him to three years in prison.
