Star striker Wayne Rooney has recently been appointed as the Manchester United's team captain. He replaces Nemanja Vadic who leaves for Inter Milan, beating out Robin van Persie who was Manager Louis Van Gaal's leader in the recent World Cup.

The team's manager praised Rooney's skill and attitude stating, "Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and my philosophy."

He goes on to add that Rooney is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team, believing that his heart and soul will be put into his captaincy.

The 29-year-old Englishman said the appointment was a huge honor for him and his family.

"It is a role I will perform with great pride," Rooney said. "Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me."

Van Gaal made the announcement after Rooney led Manchester United to a 2-1 victory in their final preseason game against Valencia at Old Trafford.

He also took the opportunity to appoint new vice-captain Darren Fletcher to assist Rooney with the team.

"I am delighted to have been named as vice-captain," said Fletcher. "It's a very proud moment for me and my family. Wayne and I have always worked together and we will continue to work closely together in our new roles."

Apart from being team captain of Manchester United, Rooney could also stand to lead England as team captain following Steven Gerrard's retirement from professional football.

Rooney currently stands third on the list of all-time top scorers at Manchester United with an astounding 216 goals. He has won five Premier League titles with the team.
